England will play in the quarter-finals of the Women's Euro 2022 on Wednesday.

They will face either Spain or Denmark.

FT: Northern Ireland 0-5 England

England advance to the knockout stages with a 5-0 win over Northern Ireland.

Russo has another glorious chance. Mead picks her out and she fires wide from six yards.

She almost had the hat-trick but can't keep it down.

Kenny Shiels makes another double substitution.

Mead whips it with pace but it's too high and goes out for a goalkick. 0-5

McKenna takes Mead down. England have a free-kick on the left-hand side of the box.

Since a three-match winning run between November 2021 and February 2022 in which they scored 23 goals and conceded just one, Northern Ireland were winless in seven matches (D1 L6) before tonight, losing their last six games in a row by an aggregate score of 19-3.

Burrows sticks out her leg to clear the cross but it ends up in her own net. That's an unfortunate own goal for the 21-year-old substitute.

Northern Ireland's concentration levels are naturally dropping.

The ball falls to Walsh for England but she can't keep her effort down.

England are very comfortable now and will fancy their chances in the quarter-finals.

Northern Ireland came into the tournament as the lowest-ranked team. They will be proud of their achievement.

Kenny Shiels gives his subs a run in their final game of the tournament.

In 16 matches under Sarina Wiegman, England have won 14 and drawn two and scored 93 goals while conceding just three goals.

They need to score seven times in this match to reach a century of goals under Wiegman, a tally they have achieved in six of the 16 games under her.

Toone strikes from 25 yards. It flies over the bar.

England's subs have made a real difference since coming on.

Toone fires it into Russo. Russo takes it past the defence with a Bergkamp-esque turn and slides it past Burns. 0-4

England will face either Spain or Denmark on Wednesday in the quarter-finals.

Northern Ireland have lost their first two matches at the UEFA Women’s EURO finals, with only three sides losing their first three games at the tournament: Italy (1984-87), Russia (1997) and Iceland (2009).

England have scored 12 goals in their three Group A games. It's a record!

It's a sixth goal in 10 England appearances for Russo.

Mead crosses from the right. Russo makes some space for herself and guides it into the bottom corner.

She's only on the pitch and she heads past Burns to make it 0-3.

England have made three changes at the break.

OFF Ellen White ON Alessia Russo

OFF Millie Bright ON Alex Greenwood

OFF Georgia Stanway ON Ella Toone

Northern Ireland get us underway for the second half at St Mary's.

HT: Northern Ireland 0-2 England

England lead 2-0 at the break.

Four minutes have been added on!

Mead takes it down so well before unleashing a low left-footed strike beyond Burns from just inside the area.

Kirby bends it into the top corner from the edge of the box. It's a brilliant first-time strike. England have broken the deadlock!

Kirby scores with a fabulous effort...

More heroic defending from Northern Ireland. Holloway blocks Stanway's effort on the line!

Northern Ireland have failed to score in their last seven matches against England, since scoring a consolation goal in an 8-1 defeat in May 1985.

Wade gets in behind the England defence. She's flagged for offside!

Hemp swings in the corner from the right. Burns comes out to punch away. She has impressed in goal tonight.

Mead sends in a super ball from the right. Bronze heads wide and will be disappointed she didn't hit the target.

Kenny Shiels will be delighted with his side's showing so far. They've kept the home nation out for most of the game. But there is still a long way to go. Northern Ireland came into the tournament as the lowest-ranked team.

Bronze sends a lovely through ball to White and the striker's first-time shot rolls just wide.

That's England best chance of the game.

Despite her family possessing a yard full of horses in Sheffield, Bright’s contracts with Chelsea and England bar her from participating in the equestrian pursuits she is determined to return to post retirement.

Bright takes the ball forward, finds herself in acres of space and drives a long-range effort at goal. Burns dives to her right to save it.

England’s 8-0 demolition of Norway on Monday was the biggest winning margin in the competition’s history.

It remains 0-0 at St Mary's. England have enjoyed the majority of possession but have failed to break down Kenny Shiels' side so far.

Her close range sails over the bar. England have a corner.

Northern Ireland clear. Hemp takes another corner. It falls to Stanway and eventually ends up in the hands of Burns. 0-0

Holloway spots Wade's run between the England centre-backs. Wade can't fully connect with the shot and England get away with one there.

It's the same XI for tonight's game. This side beat Norway 8-0 in their last game.

England have won all eleven of their matches against Northern Ireland in all competitions by an aggregate score of 59-3.

Their most recent match was a 5-0 win at Windsor Park in a World Cup qualifier in April 2022.

Burns saves well from Stanway, after England's No 10 evaded a challenge to get her shot away.

That took three minutes but it's the right decision.

And in the end after checking the monitor it's no penalty for England. 0-0

It hits Rafferty's arm and the referee has pointed to the spot as she blocks the shot that is hitting the target.

It's going to VAR

Burns pushes Bronze's right-wing cross away. Bronze, who recently joined Barcelona, was aiming for White but Burns keeps the danger away.

Wade gets in behind the English backline but her shot from a tight angle is saved by Earps.

England are playing from left to right. They are but the host nation but are wearing their red socks to show they are the away side this evening.

St Mary's is packed for this one!

England can make it three wins from three.

Northern Ireland are playing for pride tonight as its their final game of the tournament.

The teams make their way onto the pitch!

All the information you need on how and where to watch Northern Ireland take on England in the Women’s Euro 2022.

Magill out with ACL injury

Northern Ireland boss Kenny Shiels believes the loss of key striker Simone Magill to an ACL injury in Northern Ireland's opener with Norway has been "overlooked" and the absence of the Aston Villa striker "inhibited" their performance against Austria.

"It was a big, big loss for us," said the 66-year-old.

"We couldn't get up the pitch and we only had Marissa to take her position. It was good but I really wish we had Simone with us."

Northern Ireland have arrived at St Mary's. The players are going for their pre-match stroll around the ground.

England's impressive record under Wiegman

England coach Sarina Wiegman is from The Hague and led the Netherlands to unexpected Euro 2017 glory on home soil, beating Denmark in the final.

In 2019 the Oranje reached the World Cup final in France, losing to the United States and, two years later, she took charge of England.

A former Netherlands defensive midfielder, the University of North Carolina graduate was capped 104 times by her country.

After retiring from playing to bring up her two daughters, Wiegman, who is married to experienced fellow football coach Marten Glotzbach, initially combined working as a PE teacher with managing women’s teams.

On acquiring her pro licence badge, she accepted a coaching secondment with Sparta Rotterdam men, becoming the first Dutch women to coach at a male professional club, and has said it proved the perfect preparation for her subsequent post, helming Netherlands women. Routinely described as “a control freak” by former colleagues, Wiegman is a firm believer that the devil really is in the detail.

In England's 16 games under Wiegman, the Lionesses have won 14, drawn two and scored 93 goals.

St Mary's the venue

Southampton's St Mary's Stadium is looking perfect for tonight's Group A clash.

It's a beautiful evening on the south coast with temperatures sitting just above 20 degrees come kick-off time.

Shiels wary of England threat

Northern Ireland take on England at Southampton's St Mary's stadium on Friday.

Ahead of the game, Northern Ireland boss Kenny Shiels gave his thoughts on his group of players.

"You could get a really bad outcome" if he decided to use all the "developmental players" from the start at St Mary's against an England side who defeat Norway 8-0.

"We are here for the experience to get better," he said.

"I'm turning it around in my head as to how much we can utilise that and how many players of the development age we can put in there.

"It could have an adverse effect on their career, so we have to be very, very careful.

"Senior players are here to get better and consolidate, and we have to do what is right for Northern Ireland women's football team.

"If we just go and don't put on a programme or tactical set-up just to win a match, or try to win a match, We have to try and do both, we have to try and win the match by the use of some developmental players, that is where we are at with that.

"We have got almost every player on the pitch now."

England sit top of Group A with six points from their opening two games of the Women’s European Championships.

Sarina Wiegman’s side have got off to a blistering start, scoring nine and keeping two clean sheets.

England started off with a 1-0 victory over Austria and followed up that result by thumping Norway 8-0. The Lionesses have never won Europe’s showpiece, although they have featured in two finals.

Northern Ireland currently sit bottom of the group, having lost both of their opening games.

Ranked 47th in the world and playing at their first major tournament, Kenny Shiels’ side have conceded six goals in two games and only managed just two shots on target in each.
