Cycology: See Me – Designing Kit to Reduce Fatalities
We hate reading about it, seeing it on the news. Another cyclist dies, hit by a vehicle.
The See Me kit is dedicated to all the cyclists that have been killed or injured by motor vehicles while enjoying our beautiful sport of cycling.
The origin for the design came from a Cycology customer who sent in a link to a story about a female cyclist who was hit and killed by a motorist back in 2018. This tragic story struck deep with Sarina Tomchin, Cycology’s designer. Sarina spent the next day with brush in hand, pouring out all her emotions onto paper. The final painting was pictured and posted on FaceBook.
‘The painting See Me was an emotional painting. I never intended it to be put on clothing but we had requests on social media that suggested it’, explains Sarina. ‘This design has now turned out to be one of our most popular designs. I love wearing it myself, knowing motorists see the eye and See Me emblazoned on the back. Let me ride my bike and live to get home’. The See Me design is featured on an entire clothing range plus accessories, including men’s jerseys.
Cycology’s designs are well known for being bright and loud. Reflective elements are also added to help motorist see you at night. ‘Nothing is scarier to me than seeing a cyclist in all black kit, riding in the dark, set against the bitumen road. Cyclists blend in and are an accident waiting to happen’, explains Sarina. 99% of Cycology’s clothing is bright, bold, colourful and high vis. Motorists need to see you on the road from miles away, and Cycology make that happen.

Chuck Peña PEZ sez: In some ways, good cycling socks are pretty much all the same. Which is to say they are thin enough (but not too thin) to fit in tight-ish cycling shoes, have comfortable compression, allow your feet to breathe, and have just a little bit of padding for pressing on the pedals with stiff carbon soles. So socks are socks. But if you belong to the school of #marinalgains, these socks may be the droids you’re looking for.
In terms of construction, fit, and feel, the Haftners Bouclier Aero Cycling Socks (size medium for my US shoe size 9 feet) are what you would expect. The toe and heel (the two primary wear points) are a little more reinforced but not bulky. The bottom is slightly padded for a little extra comfort. And the top over the instep provides some ventilation/wicking. Compression is firm enough to grip without being overly tight. And the cuff is doubled over at the top to help make sure the socks stay up.
For those who are counting grams
But what makes the Haftners Bouclier Aero Cycling Socks different is the ribbing on the leg section. By now, you’ve probably noticed that many riders in the pro peloton wearing jerseys with ribbed sleeves. The ribbing is supposed to be more aerodynamically efficient. Well, if it’s good enough for sleeves, then why not for socks? #aero Of course, without access to wind tunnel data, I can’t vouch for how much of a difference ribbing makes.
What I can vouch for is that the Haftners Bouclier Aero Cycling Socks were on the same level as my favorite socks from a certain other company that is often considered the gold standard when it comes to cycling socks. They were very comfortable on my feet and in my cycling shoes. No complaints whatsoever after my first high-ish mileage ride in typical hot and humid Babylon on the Potomac weather. As the saying goes: my dogs weren’t barking.

Blonyx Chosen to Provide Electrolyte Drinks to Riders at This Year’s RBC GranFondo Whistler
Blonyx Biosciences Inc. (Blonyx), the North Vancouver and Squamish based sports nutrition brand today announced that it has been selected by RBC GranFondo Whistler to provide its Hydra+ electrolyte drink to cyclists at aid stations.

RBC Gran Fondo Whistler participants as well as members of the public will get the chance to try Hydra+ and other Blonyx products at the Velospoke Bike Expo on 9th September at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Entry is free.
