Cycology: See Me – Designing Kit to Reduce Fatalities

We hate reading about it, seeing it on the news. Another cyclist dies, hit by a vehicle.

The See Me kit is dedicated to all the cyclists that have been killed or injured by motor vehicles while enjoying our beautiful sport of cycling.

The origin for the design came from a Cycology customer who sent in a link to a story about a female cyclist who was hit and killed by a motorist back in 2018. This tragic story struck deep with Sarina Tomchin, Cycology’s designer. Sarina spent the next day with brush in hand, pouring out all her emotions onto paper. The final painting was pictured and posted on FaceBook.

‘The painting See Me was an emotional painting. I never intended it to be put on clothing but we had requests on social media that suggested it’, explains Sarina. ‘This design has now turned out to be one of our most popular designs. I love wearing it myself, knowing motorists see the eye and See Me emblazoned on the back. Let me ride my bike and live to get home’. The See Me design is featured on an entire clothing range plus accessories, including men’s jerseys.

Cycology’s designs are well known for being bright and loud. Reflective elements are also added to help motorist see you at night. ‘Nothing is scarier to me than seeing a cyclist in all black kit, riding in the dark, set against the bitumen road. Cyclists blend in and are an accident waiting to happen’, explains Sarina. 99% of Cycology’s clothing is bright, bold, colourful and high vis. Motorists need to see you on the road from miles away, and Cycology make that happen.

Haftners Bouclier Aero Cycling Socks – $19.99

Chuck Peña PEZ sez:  In some ways, good cycling socks are pretty much all the same. Which is to say they are thin enough (but not too thin) to fit in tight-ish cycling shoes, have comfortable compression, allow your feet to breathe, and have just a little bit of padding for pressing on the pedals with stiff carbon soles. So socks are socks. But if you belong to the school of #marinalgains, these socks may be the droids you’re looking for.

In terms of construction, fit, and feel, the Haftners Bouclier Aero Cycling Socks (size medium for my US shoe size 9 feet) are what you would expect. The toe and heel (the two primary wear points) are a little more reinforced but not bulky. The bottom is slightly padded for a little extra comfort. And the top over the instep provides some ventilation/wicking. Compression is firm enough to grip without being overly tight. And the cuff is doubled over at the top to help make sure the socks stay up.

For those who are counting grams

But what makes the Haftners Bouclier Aero Cycling Socks different is the ribbing on the leg section. By now, you’ve probably noticed that many riders in the pro peloton wearing jerseys with ribbed sleeves. The ribbing is supposed to be more aerodynamically efficient. Well, if it’s good enough for sleeves, then why not for socks? #aero Of course, without access to wind tunnel data, I can’t vouch for how much of a difference ribbing makes.

What I can vouch for is that the Haftners Bouclier Aero Cycling Socks were on the same level as my favorite socks from a certain other company that is often considered the gold standard when it comes to cycling socks. They were very comfortable on my feet and in my cycling shoes. No complaints whatsoever after my first high-ish mileage ride in typical hot and humid Babylon on the Potomac weather. As the saying goes: my dogs weren’t barking.

Do these make my feet look faster?

If you decide to treat your feet to a pair of Haftners Bouclier Aero Cycling Socks, also know that you’ll be supporting a family-run, service-disabled veteran-owned business. So a little bit like shopping your LBS.

Differences of opinion about acceptable sock height aside, there’s no arguing that classic white is classy

Blonyx Chosen to Provide Electrolyte Drinks to Riders at This Year’s RBC GranFondo Whistler

Blonyx Biosciences Inc. (Blonyx), the North Vancouver and Squamish based sports nutrition brand today announced that it has been selected by RBC GranFondo Whistler to provide its Hydra+ electrolyte drink to cyclists at aid stations.

Blonyx will be the only local brand to feature on the course and will be available at two aid stations. US brands Skratch Labs (Boulder, CO) and Hydralyte (San Diego, CA) will be provided at the remaining two.

“This invite is a milestone for the Blonyx brand as we expand from our roots in the CrossFit market to endurance sports, rubbing shoulders with other top brands in the industry.” said Rowan Minnion, CEO at Blonyx. “It’s also great testament to the attention our Hydra+ product is getting from the cycling community.”

“The RBC GranFondo Whistler is unique because it showcases our local BC terrain and cycling culture”, said Oliver Cartmell from RBC Gran Fondo. “We’re thrilled to showcase exciting local brands like Blonyx who support the road cycling community.”

RBC Gran Fondo Whistler participants as well as members of the public will get the chance to try Hydra+ and other Blonyx products at the Velospoke Bike Expo on 9th September at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Entry is free.

Perfect Balance: Canyon Unveil
5th-Generation Ultimate Road Race Bike

Three Grand Tour victories, two World Championship titles, countless stage and GC wins at the world’s most prestigious races – the Canyon Ultimate’s palmarès speaks for itself. Since the first generation launched back in 2004, the Ultimate has been and remains the absolute pinnacle of Canyon’s road performance range – a pure road bike made for racing. Its unsurpassed handling and ride feel make the Ultimate the choice of hundreds of thousands of riders around the world, from ambitious amateurs to the world’s top pros.

Now, it’s time for something new. A new era of pure road performance. Introducing the new Canyon Ultimate family, with eleven bikes available across three platforms.

“With the new Ultimate, we wanted to make something that fans of classic road race bikes would love. After a painstaking development process in collaboration with our pro riders, we’re proud to present the next evolution of the Ultimate. A timeless design that hits the perfect balance of lightness, stiffness, aerodynamics, comfort, and toughness,” explains Dr Florian Imgrund, Canyon Global Category Director – Road, on the design philosophy behind the Ultimate.

Pro teams have already been riding the new Ultimate since the beginning of the season – with two stage wins at the Vuelta a España in the hands of Alpecin-Deceuninck rider Jay Vine, the bike has already made its mark at the highest stages of racing even before its official market launch.

In comparison to the previous generation, the new Ultimate improves upon its predecessor in a number of key areas:

A complete performance package, it does the Ultimate an injustice to pigeonhole it ‘just’ as a climber’s bike or say it’s only for pros looking to shave every possible gram. It’s much more than that. This is the right bike for everyone drawn to the purity and clarity of the Ultimate’s aesthetics, but still who demand cutting-edge performance technology and performance features. And everyone looking for a bike that’s flat-out fun to ride on any route you point it at. In short, this is a road bike for everyone.

Coming in three platforms – CFR, CF SLX, and CF SL – and available in an incredibly wide size spectrum, all riders can find their perfect bike in the new Ultimate portfolio.

At the top end of the range, three flagship Ultimate CFR models, starting at £10,399, combine a superlight CFR frame with the finest components available on the market. All CFR framesets set a new performance benchmark with a premium carbon layup delivering lightness, durability, and stiffness at WorldTour level.

The CF SLX platform also comprises three models, starting at a price point of £6,249 for the Ultimate CF SLX 8 eTap, featuring SRAM’s Force eTap groupset. The £2,699 Ultimate CF SL 7 rounds out the range.

The APEX is the innermost point of your riding line through the arc of the turn. It’s the point that separates your corner entry from corner exit, and it’s necessary to hit this mark if you’re to ride the fastest line through the corner. When cornering is done correctly, the fastest SPEED ACHIEVED will be realized.

This beautiful bright anodized treatment is carried out in a cool blue hue and gold fade to achieve the look and feel of speed. The seat tube carries the number 81 to denote the year that Moots was founded, and a subtle touch to the chain stay adds to the APEX free speed theory.
